There are multiple editions of the ‘Guide’, some which deal with specific issues such as housing or credit.   • Alabama - Motor Vehicle Divison
    The division is responsible for issuing motor vehicle titles, maintaining vehicle registration information and enforcing the Mandatory Liability Insurance Act. In addition, the division administers the International Registration Plan (IRP) and International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA).

  • Alaska - Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
    The Division of Motor Vehicles titles motor vehicles, including trailers and mobile homes; registers motor vehicles, including trailers, snow vehicles, powered and non-powered boats, and All Terrain Vehicles; and licenses drivers statewide. The Division serves most of the Alaska adult population over 16 years of age by providing evidence of motor vehicle ownership and by issuing driver licenses to those qualified.

  • Arbitration Certification Program (ACP)
    The Department of Consumer Affairs' Arbitration Certification Program (ACP) certifies and monitors third-party arbitration programs of participating automobile manufacturers to ensure compliance with California laws and regulations governing resolution of warranty disputes involving new/used vehicles purchased with the manufacturer's new-car warranty. The ACP also ensures that certified programs conduct dispute resolution in a fair and expeditious manner.

  • Arizona - Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
    The Arizona DMV site provides information about driver's licenses and education, traffic schools, practice tests, auto titles and other auto-related topics.

  • Arkansas - The Office of Motor Vehicle
    The Arkansas Office of Motor Vehicle primary responsibilities are to administer the State of Arkansas vehicle registration, title, and lien perfection laws. The Office establishes and maintains the vehicle registration, title and lien perfection operating procedures used in the State Revenue Offices.

  • Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR)
    The Bureau handles complaints about non-warranty repairs and administers the smog program. (The Department of Motor Vehicles handles warranty repairs problems.)

  • California - Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
    Contact if you have a complaint against a used or new car dealer concerning registration and sales or warranty repair problems. For service warranties, see the Federal Trade Commission or the Department of Insurance. DMV also regulates driving schools, dismantlers and registration service providers. For a referral to a DMV investigator, contact your local DMV office.

  • California - New Motor Vehicle Board
    Contact about problems with new or used vehicles purchased from new car dealerships. This is the only state agency that gives advice on the lemon law, but it does not have jurisdiction over lemon law cases.

  • California Air Resources Board
    Handles complaints about smog devices and controls; provides research on the environment. Calls returned within four hours.

  • California Highway Patrol (CHP)
    Field offices can determine if automobiles meet the state's safety, noise or smog regulations. Consumers with questions regarding their vehicles should call a local field office. Check telephone book for locations throughout the state.

  • Carfax
    For a small fee, you can check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of any car to learn more about its background. Consumer Action recommends that you check the VIN before you purchase a car.

  • Center for Auto Safety (CAS)
    Provides information on auto defects, child safety seats, recalls and lemon laws. Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope with 55 cents postage with your request or complaint; include make, model and year. CAS compiles complaints to press for recalls, regulation and class action suits; maintains a referral service of California lawyers who take auto warranty and lemon law cases; publishes a guide to buying a new…

  • Colorado - Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
    Colorado DMV fulfills its statutory obligations with the highest level of customer service and in the most cost effective manner possible for the benefit of the citizens of Colorado.

  • Connecticut - Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
    The Connecticut DMV site can help you renew or register for a drivers license, find DMV forms, practice tests, drivers ed & traffic schools, auto insurance, or just about anything else related to Connecticut DMV.

  • Consumers for Auto Reliability And Safety (CARS)
    Information about California’s lemon law, updates on changes to auto safety laws, as well as links to sites about auto safety and how to avoid buying a lemon.

  • Delaware - Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
    The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles is responsible for the licensing of Delaware Residents and the registration of motor vehicles. Cars, trucks, trailers, motor homes, mobile homes, boats, motorcycles, and other vehicular modes of transportation are required to be registered with the state in order to be used.
