  • Overseas Citizens Services - DoS

  • Pacific Community Services
    Serves Contra Costa and Solano Counties. Provides housing counseling services to families in danger of losing their homes; mediation for landlord/tenant disputes and pre- and post-occupancy counseling for federally-subsidized housing programs.   • Pasadena Dist. Office of the LA County Dept. of Public Social Services
    Assists residents of Pasadena and Alta Dena with a variety of consumer problems. Handles landlord/tenant disputes including assistance in filling out questions for unlawful detainer civil cases ($10 fee), domestic violence restraining orders (free to local residents, $10 fee to others), income tax forms and civil harassment suits.

  • Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation
    PBGC was created by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 to encourage the growth of defined benefit pension plans, provide timely and uninterrupted payment of pension benefits, and keep pension insurance premiums at a minimum. Defined benefit pension plans promise to pay a specified monthly benefit at retirement, commonly based on salary and years on the job.

  • Physician Assistant Committee
    The Physician Assistant Committee (PAC) of the Medical Board of California protects consumers by licensing physician assistants and approving physician assistant training programs. The Committee ensures that licensees and approved programs have met the minimum licensure requirements.

  • Postal Rate Commission (PRC)
    The PRC is an independent regulatory agency. It is composed of five Commissioners each appointed to a six-year term of office by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The Commission reviews Postal Service requests for new domestic mail rates, fees and mail classifications.   • President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, (HHS)
    The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCPFS) serves as a catalyst to promote, encourage and motivate Americans of all ages to become physically active and participate in sports. Assisted by elements of the U.S. Public Health Service, the PCPFS advises the President and the Secretary of Health and Human Services on how to encourage more Americans to be physically fit and active.

    Consumer advocacy group that supports citizens' rights concerning health, safety and good government. Organization includes Buyers Up, Congress Watch, Critical Mass, Health Research Group and Litigation Group.

    Ed Pubs is the Education Publications Center for the ED. You can contact ED Pubs to find out what's available on topics of interest to you and to order free copies of publications, videotapes, CD-ROMS, posters, bookmarks, and other products. Many publications can be acquired instantly in electronic form via the Internet. You can order copies of publications using one of the ways listed above.

  • Riverside County Department of Community Action
    Mediates disputes in the following areas: landlord/tenant, harassment, neighbor disputes, small claims, employment, domestic, consumer/business and senior issues. Also assists low-income households with utilities. Other programs include notary, tatoo removal, mentoring, apprenticeship programs and IDA savings-matching.

  • Safe Drinking Water Hotline, (EPA)
    The hotline answers questions on the Safe Drinking Water Act, rules and regulations, and consumer questions.

  • San Francisco Neighborhood Legal Assistance Foundation
    Legal assistance for low-income S.F. residents with problems in housing, public benefits, welfare, Social Security, employment, and domestic violence. Legal staff will evaluate consumer calls and make appropriate referals. There is no charge for eligible clients. Persons with government benefit problems can be seen in the office between 9 - 12.   • San Francisco Rent Stabilization and Arbitration Board (Rent Board)
    Contact with questions about rent control in San Francisco. It may investigate reports of wrongful eviction as defined by city rent laws. This is an agency of the City/County of S.F.

  • San Francisco State University Legal Referral Center
    Information and referral; assists clients in handling their own legal problems. Staff specialize in landlord/tenant, small claims court procedures, consumer rights, domestic relations and labor law. An attorney is available by appointment a few days each month ($10 for one half-hour).

  • San Francisco Tenants Union
    Advises tenants on their rights. Publishes "San Francisco Tenants' Rights Handbook" and "Tenant Times." Drop-in counseling for non-members; phone counseling for members only. Assistance in tenant organizing. Call for hours.

  • Santa Clara County District Attorney
    Complaints are taken in writing. Call for a complaint form or write to the above address detailing the circumstances of your complaint. Provides information and referral; landlord/tenant information also available. Offices in San Jose.

  • Santa Cruz County District Attorney
    Advises on buyer-seller disputes; provides legally-binding mediation/arbitration and investigates and prosecutes consumer fraud, misleading advertising and unfair business practices.

  • SOCAP International (Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals)
    SOCAP provides training, conferences, and publications to encourage and maintain the integrity of business in transactions with consumers. The organization also encourages and promotes effective communication and understanding among business, government and consumers, and defines and advances the consumer affairs profession.

  • Social Security Administration (SSA)
    The Office of Public Inquiries (TEH) provides a central receipt, control, acknowledgment, response and referral program for high priority and other inquiries addressed to SSA Headquarters. The office develops correspondence policy and procedure and guide language on recurring topics and issues for use throughout the Agency.

  • Sonoma County Adult And Youth Development (SCAYD)

    Offers resources and referrals in Rohnert Park. This agency provides emergency rental assistance funds to help tenants keep their rental units, or help with first month's rent and/or deposits for moving into a rental unit (HCA Fund Program).
