The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is authorized under Section 8 of the United States Housing Act of 1937 and amended by the Quality Housing and Work Responsibility Act of 1998. The purpose of the program is to provide rental assistance to very low-income families and individuals to enable them to rent decent, safe and affordable housing. Very low income persons and/or families are defined as having incomes at or below 50 percent of the area median income as established by the Department of Housing and Urban development. The Section 8 Voucher Program is available throughout the United States and is administered by public housing authorities. In Sonoma County, excluding the incorporated city of Santa Rosa, this program is operated by the Sonoma County Housing Authority.
